A guide to Meshginshahr

Meshgin Shahr (مشگين شهر in Persian) is an ancient city in Ardebil province, creation of which dates back to the Sassanid era. The city along with its historic attractions, offers a lush nature with fantastic visions.

Ardebil is one of the beautiful provinces with numerous tourist attractions located in the northwest of the country and in the region of Azerbaijan. It is evident that Mashineh Shahr, like other cities in the northwest province of the country, has been honored with this blessing and has gained a lot of fans in the field of tourism due to its nature and its spectacular views.

Khia or Khiuw is the name archaeologists are considered as the main name of the city. In the beginning of Islamic era, this city was also known as Meymand. However, during the rule of the Seljuqs and Atabank of Azerbaijan, Meshgin Shahr was known as "Varvi". Historians believe that in the middle of the 11th century, after the victory of the Alp Arslan over the rulers of Georgia and them converting to Islam, the rule of the city was awarded to one of the rulers of the time named "Bishkekin", and since then the city has been called "Meshgin Shahr" in the local dialect. Eventually, during the reign of Pahlavi II, the name of Khiawi, which means a place full of water and trees. Meshgin Shahr is known as the city of historical castles, which is one of the most considerable tourist attractions in the present days of Iran.

Kohneh Ghaleh

One of the most famous tourist attractions in the city of Meshgin Shahr is a historic mansion that dates back to the Sassanid rule; this mansion is known as the Kohneh Ghaleh (in Persian means old castle). This ancient monument was built in an approximate area of 15,000 square meters. It is located over a hill with 50 meters heights and the height of the old castle is more than 1,400 meters, and the old builders have a castle with 6 small towers, thick walls and small chambers, like a manger that seems to be with him for a soldier and a horse.

Suspension Bridge of Moshgin City

The Suspension Bridge of Mashgin Shahr is definitely one of the most beautiful and exciting tourist attractions in the city. The bridge, built at an altitude of 80 meters from the Khiau Chaie River, overlooks Meshginshahr Forest Park.  The bridge is 2 meters wide and 365 meters long and is known as the longest suspended bridge in the Middle East. It is interesting to know that the native experts in the interior and the engineers fields have designed and constructed this beautiful yet modern attraction. In fact, the bridge was built in one of the Mashginshahr tourism destinations called "Khiav ta girdoli tourism zone", occupying a land with an area of ​​130 hectares costing a budget of 40 billion Tomans. It is very exciting to watch the beautiful scenery of the forest park as well as a spectacular view of the beautiful Sabalan peak during the crossing of this suspended bridge. On holiday days, over 3,000 people cross this beautiful bridge a day.

Kapz Tourist Area

The "Kapz Tourist Area" is one of the most beautiful tourist attractions in Meshginshahr, which is located 20 km from the city of Ardabil. People mostly find it most suitable to get to this place during the spring and autumn. Large and high cliffs, and their uniformity are important features of this attractive tourist area. The beautiful nature of the area around the Copper valley is simply spectacular. The special vegetation and the presence of fruit trees such as raspberries and hawthorns, have added to the beauty of this area. Brown bears, wolves and fox, along with a large variety of birds, have chosen the area as their habitat and that is yet another beauty on its own.

As mentioned before, the beautiful and historic city of Mesginshahr is one of the old and beautiful lands of the country and the province of Ardabil. This city is today considered as one of the tourism destinations not only in the country but also in the region. The Sassanid basin, Qiz Qalasi, Arshagh Castle, the cave belonged to the Stone Age in the village of Binelar, Ghare Ghala, the historic site of Ilani Dagh, the Sabalan Mountain, the spas, Meshginshahr Forest Park, Hooshang Meidani and Shirvan Daresi, are among the other spectacular views of this city. Visiting them could be interesting to the nature lovers around the world.
